BollywoodNews: RGV Reveals The Reason Behind Not Casting SRK & Salman Khan In Satya

The 1998 Bollywood action crime drama Satya is one of the most-loved ‘90s cinema. The storyline, the direction, and the honesty with which it was depicted made Satya a textbook for all the gangster movies made later in Bollywood. For the first time in Bollywood, the gangsters were given normal treatment. They also have families and they also deal with usual household things - and that was never done before.

Ram Gopal Varma said in an interview, “Genre films might get a bigger audience if you cast stars, but that's at the expense of not being honest to the film. In Satya, for example, in 1997, had Shah Rukh or Salman both played Bhiku Mhatre or Satya's roles, I don't think it would have been the same film. Even if it worked, it might have worked for different reasons since stars work anyway, but, it wouldn't have remained the same film because they'd have looked very different. Both Satya and Bhiku Mhatre looked very believable, I could easily believe these guys lived in the chawls or dirty by lanes, which would've never looked believable had Shah Rukh and Salman played those parts.”

Perhaps for this very reason, Satya became a benchmark among the filmmakers of that time and the next generation. RGV steered away from this Bollywood star power and still managed to make a great film. And thank god he didn’t opt for SRK or Salman Khan otherwise we wouldn’t have got the superb performances by Manoj Bajpayee and J. D. Chakravarthy.

Scripted by Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla, Satya had great music too composed by Vishal Bhardwaj (who later went on to direct path-breaking Bollywood movies like Omkara that you can watch online on Mzaalo for free) and lyrics were penned by the great Gulzar. That Sapne Mein Milti Hai song still pulls people to the dance floor while Badalon Se takes us to a dreamland of romance.

Like RGV’s 1995 classic romance drama Rangeela, this crime drama too went on to establish careers for many people. Anurag Kashyap is one of them who will be forever thankful to Satya. This Manmarziyaan director (watch Manmarziyaan movie on Mzaalo in full HD for free) said once, “I learned everything to do with films while working with Varma on Satya and I still reflect in my movies what I learned during the making of the film.”

The characterization of Satya was so raw and intense that even Meghna Gulzar (director of Filhaal that you can watch for free on Mzaalo) said that in the song Kallu Mama, she could smell the beer on the character's breath.

After completing 21 years of release, Satya is still hugely appreciated. If you haven’t seen this Hit Bollywood Movie, then watch it on Mzaalo for free. Download this best free app for watching movies and win exciting reward coins from big brands like Zomato, The Man Company, Ease My Trip, etc.
